Extension works of Cristoforo Colombo Breakwater – 1st Allotment
Client: Autorità Portuale di Civitavecchia
Location: Port of Civitavecchia, Italy
The works mainly consisted in the prosecution almost rectilinear (deviation of 2 grades) of the main breakwater previously completed in 1991. The structure was designed as follows:
- A rubble mound base with a core made of 1st category rocks. At - 18.50m the structure has a length of 71,00 m and reaches the sedbed with a slope 2/1 port-side and 3/1 sea-side, where it is interrupted by a step 6 m large at a level of –24.00 m, before reaching the seabed reclaimed with quarry tout-venant. Seaward the rubble mound is armoured with a cover layer made of 3rd category rocks, 3m thick;
- An infrastructure at a level of -18,50 m made of cellular caissons having dimension 20,00x29,86x19,00 topped with concrete slabs. The toe of the caissons, on the sea-side, is protected from scouring by blocks 3,00x6,00x1,00 m.
- A superstructure made of a concrete slab from level +0,50 m and a concrete wave wall with crown wall 2,00m wide at a level of +8,50 m; sea-side revetment is both vertical and sloping, port-side revetment is almost vertical.
