Port of Livorno - Dry-dock

Client: Consorzio Livornese Bacini di Carenaggio
Location: Port of Livorno, Italy

The gravity dock is founded directly on the sea bed, consisting of closely alternated clay and sandy silty layers.

In order to carry out the works at sea under dry conditions, a 1,250 long dam was built, with waterproofed underwater diaphragms placed down to -30 m.

In order to construct the dock basin, excavation works down to -20.5 m were carried out with maritime means before the dam was closed. Then, all the water inside was gradually and slowly removed to ensure proper stability of the slopes.

The partially reinforced inside dock basin is 350 m long, 56 m wide, with a draft ranging from -10 to -11 m.

The bottom floor is accessible to self-propelled vehicles through a ramp which goes down to the basin through a reinforced concrete tunnel which is statically separated from the dock by means of an inspectable joint.

The works also included the completion of a protection sea wall, three quays, crane rails, and aprons.
